Celebrity 2025 - Episode 4 Recap
This leg of the race started with a curveball as the race could not travel through Nicaragua as planned. Instead, the teams had to fly over the border to restart in Liberia, Costa Rica, with a destination of the archipelago of Bocas del Toro in Panama.
With the first three teams split by only 8 minutes, each team was keen to try to make an early lead
Molly & Tyler decided to channel their inner "Indiana Jones" and whizz down the Pacific coast to Puerto Jimenez, for a jungle adventure.
Adventure was very much the word, with Tyler admitting that he and nature don't work well together, but facing his fears of insects in an open-air treehouse. Their real exploration in the leg though, was really more emotional based, with the isolation of the jungle leading Tyler to open up about the trauma of witnessing a fatal stabbing as a teenager. He explained how that lead to his feeling of always wanting to be in control - a thing he was clearly trying to let go of when leaping out the way when he thought he saw a spider.
Their working stop was good, but backfired when they discovered the boats out of Puerto Jimenez stopped running at 5pm, leaving them stranded overnight while others raced ahead.
Usually the most competent team, Anita & Bal showed some cracks in their armor this week, reverting back to their slightly odd episode one mentality where they talk about Bal like he’s 100!
They aimed for an eco-resort in El Castillo but struggled with a patchy bus route that left them hitchhiking. The physical toll led to a bit of a breakdown for Bal, who felt he wasn't "providing" or leading enough for his daughter - which might go some way to explain their age concerns. Bal is only 68, but if he still wants to work like he’s 20 he will struggle more.
Anita stepped up to carry the team, although when a bus driver in Limon refused their dollars, it was Bal who ‘sprinted’ into action to change their money at a nearby bank.
I think that highlighted the biggest flaw in this duo, they both want to lead and sometimes jump into action without thinking it through. Bal took long enough time exchanging money that Anita thought of at least three better ideas, but couldn’t move because he’d wandered off.
I think mine and my mum's secret weapon will be kind of like our under-the-radar dark-horse-ness. - Dylan
The opposite issue seems to apply to Dylan & Jackie, who give the impression neither want to lead.
They headed inland like Anita & Bal to the "Little Amazon" of Tortuguero, spending heavily on tours to see wildlife like alligators and sloths. (I think more what Tyler had in mind for his jungle adventure).
Jackie seemed to embrace the backpacker lifestyle staying in a hostel, but their tours and the cost of taking a more expensive boat to Limon might start to limit their options in the next legs.
I’m really feeling the cost of Costa Rica. - Dylan
Starting seven hours behind everyone else, siblings Roman & Harleymoon had to hustle, aware Costa Rica was going to cost them.
They focused on earning money, first by building "monkey bridges" and later entertaining seniors at a community centre. They talked a bit about their somewhat ‘workaholic’ personalities, which wasn’t always helping them in life, but seemed to be quite the boon this leg. Well mostly, although their delay in leaving the senior center meant they missed a crucial bus to the border by five minutes - resulting in them paying for a taxi to Limon.
Arriving in Bocas del Toro the teams had a golf-cart race, or possibly golf cart maze, as all of them seemed to struggle with the directions, although the lack of crashes suggested they wern’t quite as close as the edit made it look.
In a shocking turnaround Dylan & Jackie the self appointed ‘team tortoise’ managed to leapfrog the competition, proving that slow and steady (and expensive boats) can win the race!
But with the budget tightening and the teams entering Panama, will they be able to keep pole position for episode 5? Be sure to make your prediction before it airs!
